Case Study Introduction

Customer Summary

A leading multinational insurance company, headquartered in the UK, serves more than 33 million customers globally and employs over 29,000 people. With a growing focus on digital transformation and sustainability, the organisation set out to modernise its observability capabilities and reduce operational overheads.

To meet internal service demand, the insurer required a robust and scalable monitoring solution that could support hundreds of business users while aligning with broader corporate targets – including their net-zero ambitions.

Customer Testimonial

Business Challenges

The insurer’s operations team supported over 1,400 internal users across numerous business-critical functions but spent a disproportionate amount of time managing infrastructure, coordinating upgrades, and handling administrative tasks. This operational overhead limited their capacity to focus on delivering strategic value and responding proactively to incidents. At the same time, increasing demand for timely and reliable insights exposed visibility gaps across a complex IT estate, creating risks to performance and availability.

Compounding these challenges was an aggressive project timeline that required a seamless migration to a cloud-based observability platform. The solution had to be delivered without disrupting ongoing operations or losing critical monitoring capabilities, while also providing scalability and resilience to support the organisation’s broader net-zero and digital transformation goals.

Requirements

To support a successful transition, the insurer had the following technical and operational requirements:

Migration from existing Splunk App Monitoring to a fully managed Splunk Cloud SaaS environment

End-to-end visibility of customer-facing applications and infrastructure

Dashboards and analytics to support over 700 business users

Platform scalability to accommodate 1.5TB daily ingest and high-volume search queries

Automated alerting, trend analysis and system health monitoring

A trusted partner capable of delivering at speed and scale

Collaborative Planning to Meet Agressive Timelines

A compressed planning phase enabled the team to map out a clear delivery path, ensuring project milestones were met without delay.

Streamlined Migration of Dashboards, Rules and Configurations

All existing platform elements were seamlessly transitioned to the new enviornment, preserving functionality and minimising rework.

Implementation of Alerting, Response Policies and Health Rules

Monitoring logic was rebuilt and enhanced with Splunk Cloud to ensure robust, automated oversight of applications and services.

Cloud-Based Infrastructure to Reduce Admin Overhead

Moving to a SaaS model eliminated the need for internal maintenance, allowing teams to focus on strategic activity rather than upgrades.

Scalable Ingest and Storage to Future-Proof the Platform

The new architecture supports 1.5TB of daily ingest and 76TB of searchable data, giving the insurer flexibility as its data needs grow.

Somerford worked closely with the customer’s internal teams to ensure seamless adoption with no disruption to ongoing operations.
