What is Varonis' Database Activity Monitoring?
Author: Beth Laws
Release Date: 09/09/2025
Once again, Varonis has expanded its security capabilities as it now introduces next-generation Database Activity Monitoring (DAM). This comes after Varonis acquired Cyral earlier this year. The Cyral cloud-native DAM solution fits rather perfectly with Varonis security offerings, allowing Varonis customers to monitor database access activity, threats and identity, and classify sensitive data across popular databases, including Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle and MySQL.
An Agentless Approach to DAM
Many traditional DAM solutions require complex deployments and a lot of ongoing manual support. Some require agents to be deployed on every single database server, leading to slow deployment executions and high prices. Some large organisations can even require hundreds of these agents to be deployed, and consequently, it can take years to complete this rollout process. This unfortunately means lots of businesses often have several databases which go unmonitored by DAM or Security tools, leaving potential blind spots where sensitive data may reside.
With the Varonis Agentless approach to DAM, there is no need to deploy multiple agents for both on-prem and cloud databases, making it easy to scale across thousands of databases. Varonis is a cloud-native platform, which also makes deployment even quicker and easier and can be deployed within weeks. Being connected to the Varonis Cloud also means there is no need to worry about managing Varonis infrastructure and updates, too.
A Unified Data Security Platform
Varonis' DAM capabilities mean their platform offers much more than traditional or legacy DAM solutions can offer. Activity across databases is continuously monitored, tracking database queries, access events, and any database changes, providing a complete audit trail of who has accessed which data. Not only that, with Varonis data classification technology, it detects what type of sensitive data exists in your databases and how much of that sensitive data is over-exposed and could be at risk, or perhaps has been incorrectly accessed by the wrong person. Alongside this, security policies can be enforced across databases by being able to automatically revoking any unwanted permissions to help ensure compliance with any applicable regulations.
Varonis employs User and Entity Behaviour Analytics to understand what is normal behaviour for accounts across the network, helping to better detect any unusual database access activity. The platform also has many built-in threat models, detecting suspicious database queries and sensitive data exfiltration.
As Varonis' next-gen DAM is built into the wider Varonis Security Platform, monitoring many Cloud storage platforms and Saas tools as well as databases, it provides a unified security tool covering many bases of your network. Security teams will have a single pane of glass to understand not only database access for a user, but access to that same user's audit trail across other data stores and easily investigate alerts by gaining a lot more context about an account's overall activity.
