Smart Cities - How Data is Improving your Commute

4/11/2018

In this day and age, data is all around us, from our personal devices to our movement around the country, we are all emitting more data than ever. Businesses, Government and local councils are now leveraging this data more than ever to not only provide themselves a better insight into their services, products, or customers, but also to make our lives easier and reduce everyday inconveniences, like missing a tube or not being able to find a parking space.

You have probably visited a car park that told you how many spaces it had, or even split this into each level - but what if you could see the situation at the car park before your journey?

Using the same data that creates the signage as you enter the car park, councils can ease your daily commute by letting you know where there are car park spaces nexarest to your final destination, whilst also avoiding congested routes.

This isn’t where the data driven commuting stops, many major rail and road services are also leveraging customer behavioural data to add extra routes or services at peak times or on congested routes. Even the applications we use on a daily basis for directions will route you, based on traffic conditions, advising you of traffic getting worse or bad traffic on your regular route.

Splunk’s Machine Learning algorithms* and extensible search language can take this one step further, using the data accrued over time to give you up to the minute predictions, and even remind you to leave earlier due to increased traffic in the area you are planning to drive. A large transportation agency is using Splunk to allow them more efficient and accurate navigation, estimated arrival times, as well as where there are spaces for vessels to dock safely and securely with the least amount of traffic. These same principles can be used for end users, by leveraging transport data as well as car park information, to enable users to know where to park before they leave home - so you don’t have to drive around the block ten times trying to find a parking space.
